By an act of faith Abraham said yes to God to travel to an unknown place that would become his home (Hebrews 118). Read the experiences of Colonel John M. Bate, who traveled to many a destination unknown as private secretary to two Salvation Army generals.

Destination Unknown Memoirs of a private secretary to the General of The Salvation Army John Bate 9780976846543 Books

This book, is a must read for any Salvationist who wishes to follow or know what the General does on some of his, in this book, as John Bate only served Generals Arnold Brown and his successor.
The details of some of their journeys into what was then some Third World Countries who had no respect for this large Christian organisation.
Most of the writing is about the work with General Brown, and getting deep into India and some villages where perhaps only a single lady was the officer to command and nurture the work of The Salvation Army. This however, did not deter those who had claimed Salvation and who loved The Salvation Army and what it stood for.
For many of them, to be able just to see "their General" was beyond comprehension and the truth be told, it also had a large impact on both the General and the author, John Bate, who when he retired from active service as Colonel, after commencing his training back in his home country, New Zealand.
Very impelling and detailed descriptions of the Bate's various appointments all over the world describe what many officers had given up in their own personal lives, just to be true to the Call of God, to serve a full time servants / Officers in The Salvation Army. Back in those days, and still in many countries the spouse must also have been a dedicated and indeed a Commissioned Officer (Ordained) as well. The calling of the spouse to full-time officership, was just as rewarding and demanding as it was for the husband.
Their is of course, some difficult moments as would be expected in travelling all around the world especially in some geographic areas where Christianity is forbidden and / or certainly not encouraged. However, there are many lighter moments depicted in the book where two people who have travelled together for so long, are able to relieve some of their anxieties through humour, something for which I know General Brown was well known for, and from reading the book, I assume that Bate also enjoyed humour.
I was very comfortable reading it on my Kindle Fire. There are some photos included in the book that came out very clear when I came to them.
It is too bad that there are not more books of this nature written by these dedicated people, who have given up all they had in worldly possessions, to heed the Call of God to serve Him full time.
I strongly recommend this book to all Salvation Army Officers, Soldiers, Adherents, church attendees, and friends.
Were that we had more people like the many that Bate has written about in his book, we would no doubt have a much better world.

My wife and her parents both knew the Bate family so it was an enjoyable read of the Colonels adventures. Hard to put down as we came across people we know. Tried to give one of them a ring to tell them about the book but they are overseas at present.
This book written by a Salvationist is really an in house publication as it talks Salvation Army talk. I found it interesting but awkward to read as the writer keeps jumping from two different Generals. I would have enjoyed it more if he had concentrated on one person and then the other. Yet for a New Zealand officer he certainly travelled the world. I wondered though when he was doing this how his wife felt, survived what was she doing? SA officers are supposed to have equal postings but we didn't hear that.
I too wonder what a non Salvationist would make of the story!
