Everyone knows that I'm a sucker for first person POV, so when this story started out in that writing style I have to automatically add a star. But this book gets deeper than that. The writer goes back and forth, first person on one chapter, and third person the next. The whole story bounces back and forth this way to give you the things that are happening behind the sense, and I found that completely necessary to tell the complex story line.

The incorporation of two different cultural urban legends I found fascinating. It gives the story the "something different" factor that I am always looking for.

The protagonist, John Rogers, is forced to make volition to continue through with his dual self. I found the internal struggle between his human nature and animal instincts fascinating.

I always talk about "write what you know", and it is very apparent that this is what the author did, and it makes this story shine.

Are you tired of the same old stories of vampires and werewolves? This is a nitty-gritty novel about a soldier, John Rogers, who returns home from a tour in Africa having been bitten not by a wolf, but by a hyena. John not only struggles with his inner-hyena, but also with the local werewolf pack. Richard Farnsworth makes these battles interesting by giving each were-species different strengths and weaknesses. I was also impressed with his character development and theme of "how to be good man when there's a beast inside you." Unlike his first novel he leaves the ending open for future books, which I hope he finds time to write soon!
I got this book as a promotional copy, and it was a real treat to jump back into Rick Fransworth's world. Like his previous novel, Succumbing to Gravity, Fransworth showcases his hallmark ability to create flesh and blood characters that must overcome their gritty pasts whilst also combating some amazing inner demons. In StG, we saw the world from the view of a drug-addled fallen angle, whereas in Bouda the MC is a hardened war veteran/were-hyena! Throw in a sultry exotic dancer who has a hit squad of werewolves after her, and watch the action blast off the page. James Patterson meets Gary Brandner. You'll love it!
This story moves fast! The author engages the reader immediately and doesn't let go until the tale is told. By frequently shifting perspectives among the well-crafted characters and packaging intense action into short chapters, he makes it very difficult to put the book down. Obviously, not all soldiers returning from war turn into werewolves or were-hyenas, but the lycanthrope legend is an innovative and effective allegory for the physical and mental turmoil that accompanies a combat veteran's return to civilian life. It is obvious that this is a very personal issue for Farnsworth. Although I have never been a soldier, his skillful rendering of this tale gave me new insights into the challenges facing those who have had that experience. I look forward to reading other works by Richard Farnsworth.
